What e-invoice is (and is not)
E-invoice is LHDN's digital record of every transaction between businesses. It is not a new tax — it is a new way of reporting the same tax.
For freelancers and SMEs, the practical change: every invoice you issue and every bill you receive is transmitted digitally to LHDN instead of sitting in a folder.
Who must comply, and when
LHDN has phased the rollout by turnover. The smallest businesses were brought into the system in the final phase, so if you are a small company or freelancer, compliance is already in scope.
The good news: you do not need an ERP. A correct invoice file with the required fields, submitted through an approved channel, is enough.
- Your invoice number and date
- Your name, TIN (Tax Identification Number) and business registration
- Customer name and TIN (for B2B)
- Item descriptions, quantity, unit price
- Subtotal, SST (if chargeable), total
- Currency and payment method
The cheapest way to stay compliant
Start with correct invoices. Most rejected e-invoices fail because the invoice itself is missing fields — not because the software is wrong.
Use a proper invoice template with auto-calculating formulas (subtotal, SST 6%, total), fill it correctly, and you are 80% of the way there.
Keep it simple
Do not buy an expensive system on day one. Get the invoice right, keep digital copies, and let your accountant handle the submission channel.
When volume grows, move to an automated system. Until then, correct templates beat fancy software.
